Curriculum Development
Often,
districts are less than confident that a guaranteed, viable curriculum exists
and is actually taught. Developing and refining curriculum enables teachers to
identify gaps, redundancies, and misalignments in curriculum and instruction
programs AND fosters dialogue among teachers about their work.
Are the
following statements true in your district?
· Teachers ask questions of their students such as: "Didn't you
learn how to do that in 6th grade? I think it was taught then."
· Teachers and administrators are not certain that what students are
learning is essential to their success in future grades.
· Core team teachers have not been successful in following through
with creating and implementing interdisciplinary units.
· Teachers are conscientious and seem to never have enough time to
get everything done.
· Teachers are frustrated because they are not sure that what they
are teaching is aligned to state standards or assessments.
· Teachers have not been provided time and direction to embed the
local and state curriculum objectives and standards into each of their teaching
plans.
Many
districts across the country have not been able to address these issues with
confidence. By providing the opportunity for your teachers to develop and
refine curriculum, you increase the likelihood that they will lay out a viable
set of standards so that they can significantly raise levels of student
achievement.
