Data Walks

Visit more classrooms more often. Make a difference.

 

 

Create powerful, data-driven school improvement plans as a result. Data Walks is a tool for leaders to assist in the collection, compilation, and disaggregation of data to effectively guide them to solutions for school improvement – solutions that are research-based and needs-driven. Participation in this training will result in practicing and reflecting on the process of conducting school-wide classroom visits. Learn how to monitor curriculum and instruction in your district and ultimately increase student learning by using this focused and efficient process to visit classrooms.

 

 

Data Walks is a focused process that is:

· A brief three to four-minute visit in classrooms

· A way to collect school-wide data throughout the day during prime instructional time focused on curriculum and instructional practices

· Focused on data that drives decisions regarding school improvement and professional development

· Focused on professional growth and increased student learning

 

 

Data Walks will:

· Increase principal visibility

· Provide real-time classroom data to drive decisions

· Provide information for school improvement purposes

· Elicit patterns and trends across grade levels and departments

· Decrease discipline referrals

· Increase student learning

 

 

Data Walks centers on the following guiding questions:

· Is the learning objective posted and aligned to the state standards?

· What is the level of thinking (rigor rate) of the students?

· What measurements are used to assess learning?

· What is the engagement level of the classroom?

· What research-based instructional strategies are evident?

· Does the environment contribute to student learning?

 

 

Day Walks I Training Outcomes:

· Identify and practice observing the components of Data Walks.

· Standards

· Alignment of Objective

· Level Of Thinking

· Research Based Instructional Strategies

· Assessment Methods

· Learning Environment Strategies

· Individualize coaching at school site

· Practice Data Walks 3 to 4 times in real classroom settings.

· Reflect on the process of collecting school-wide classroom data about learning.

· Analyze the collected data to identify trends and patterns across the campus.

 

 

Data Walks II Training Outcomes:

· Practice and reflect on the process of conducting school-wide Data Walks.

· Determine patterns of curriculum and instructional practices based on Data Walk collection.

· Identify the correlation between Data Walks information and student achievement.

· Develop goals and targets to direct the campus on identified priorities based on information determined through Data Walks and student achievement results.

· Web based tools/forms provided.

· Individualize coaching at school site.

 

 

In addition to acquiring new knowledge and skills, participants leave with the following implementation tools:

· Data Walks Tally Sheet - A form to collect data.

· A form/process to compile and disaggregate the data.

· Key Targets for Curriculum and Instruction - A tool to identify the curricular and instructional priorities for your school based on the data.

· Power Point - A guide to facilitate the orientation and dialogue needed to educate your staff on the process.

· Data Walks Reporting Tool – an excel spreadsheet that allows principals to input Data Walks information and generate graphs to engage teachers in campus wide reflection for improvement.

· A resource notebook to be used for development of teachers.

 

 

Who:

· Data Walks is meant for district and campus-level administrators as well as lead teachers or department heads.

· Both open-enrollment and client-booked trainings are full at 25. Any overbooking must be approved.

· Participants are the same people for Data Walks I and Data Walks II.

· Clients must book both trainings. Data Walks I can not be delivered without Data Walks II.

 

 

When:

· Data Walks I is two consecutive days and Data Walks II is two consecutive days.

· Training dates should be scheduled at least four weeks apart. Attendees need to practice walking classrooms and bring back their data.

· Schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

· Trainings are available throughout the year, when school is in session at locations nation-wide.

· Trainings can only be scheduled when school is in session with students in the classrooms.

 

 

Where:

· Open enrollment sessions take place at school campuses that are willing to allow the attendees to walk through their classrooms

· District sponsored trainings are held at a campus the district assigns. Data Walks I and Data Walks II can be at different sites with in a school district.
