Reading
Develop
student skills that ensure better understanding of text and application of
conceptual ideas.
Reading is an overarching skill that
significantly impacts all content areas. Students’ reading proficiency is
paramount to their success in all content areas and their perception of
themselves as lifelong learners.
This 3-day
reading training addresses the critical elements in each of the five (5)
components of reading and how to incorporate these into a guided reading
classroom at the primary level and a collaborative learning environment at the
intermediate level:
· Phonemic Awareness and Phonics – with age
appropriate skills continuum (primary level)
· Vocabulary – includes appropriate vocabulary word lists and
the development of academic vocabulary
· Fluency – elements and impact of fluency and fluency rates
· Comprehension – strategies of proficient readers including
literature circles and organizational patterns of text
Participants
will explore current research on best practices in reading instruction as well
as learning theory and how the brain learns to read. Effective, research-based
instructional strategies are taught in each area that enables teachers to
scaffold students’ reading skills. Strategies for teaching to the special needs
of students and second language learners will be learned. Word analysis
activities, literacy centers, and the use of word walls in the classroom are
addressed. Participants are provided with tools for tracking student
performance.
